Recovery by Choice:
Living and Enjoying Life Free of Alcohol and Drugs. A Workbook.

By Martin Nicolaus

Recovery by Choice is a tool for those who want to build their personal recovery program in a structured, systematic manner. In its 300 pages, you will find dozens of worksheets and exercises that address major issues facing most people in recovery.  See Table of Contents. The book does not contain a prescribed recovery program, other than the 'prime directive': Don't Drink Or Use No Matter What. Its purpose, rather, is to assist you in devising a recovery path tailor-made for your particular background, personality, and environment. The book is suitable for self-study (bibliotherapy) or for working in groups. Its open-ended approach is compatible with a wide range of abstinence-based treatment methods. The book is direct, concrete, empathetic, and respectful of the basic truth that each person must find their own way.  See Reader Responses

Recovery By Choice, 300 pp. 8.5" x 11", US$20.00 + S/H. ISBN 0-9659429-3-7. Third printing, 2006.

What Readers Are Saying:

Out of all the books that I have read regarding recovery, this one was a very thought-out and down to earth approach... Anyone making the decision to obtain and maintain sobriety should get this book. --
Pamela H., LSW, BASW, CDCA, Cincinnati OH

A more thorough and meaningful toolkit for one's voyage of inward discovery than AA's 'searching and fearless moral inventory,' since it dispenses with dictum, dogma and guilt. -- Paul P., Sonoma CA

It's the best book written for a person in recovery that I've come across in a long time.  I suggest it daily here at the Hospital. -- Sam Houx, Director of Counseling, Schick-Shadel Hospital.
